Attitudes in the Alberta Craft Beer Scene

Alberta craft beer is in a period of rapid expansion. There has been an explosion of new local breweries opening up across the province. It is really exciting to witness this take place. However, I have noticed on social media and sometimes even in person, certain attitudes that I find detrimental to our local beer culture. This article will be my rant/plea that we make sure to develop a local beer culture that is inclusive, educational, progressive and above all FUN. Continue reading

What I am Excited About: An Update On Our Growing Scene

It has been a while since I have written a post about one of the new Alberta craft breweries. I think that my last one was on Trolley 5. So what I plan on doing here is to write a post on the new local breweries that I am particularly excited about. Continue reading

Beer, Politics and the Economy

A lot of people have been asking me what my thoughts are on the recent changes that the Alberta NDP government has implemented; particularly those impacting beer and brewing. I’ve also noticed that there has been a lot of noise surrounding these changes in the media; some of it has been a little more emotional than factual. It is because of this that I have decided to write a little something about how I view these recent changes. Continue reading

For The Love Of Brewing Beer

Today I have the pleasure of writing an article on my buddy, Jonas Hurtig. Jonas is a fellow beer lover (surprise surprise that we’d be friends) who also happens to be one of the best homebrewers that I’ve ever met. About a year back he made the jump into professional brewing. Soon one of his recipes will be released around the province as a seasonal one-off! So let’s get to know him a little bit. Continue reading

Favourite Winter Seasonals From BC Beer Bloggers & One Albertan

I have to say that I was pretty excited when I got the invite to collaborate with this group of British Columbia craft beer bloggers. The beer culture on our western coast is something for all of us to aspire to. Just looking at all of the dedicated bloggers out there gives you an idea of how popular their local craft brewing scene is. The idea behind this collaboration is for each blogger (West Coast Beer Geek, Mike’s Craft Beer, Dennis the Foodie, me &The BeerRater ) to choose 3 winter seasonal releases that we’re excited about. Since I am an Albertan my choices will come from our microbreweries. I should warn you that at the time of writing this one of my choices has not been released yet; I’m just really excited to check it out! Continue reading

Ed McNally: A Tribute To A Life Lived To Its Fullest

Alberta lost one of its most accomplished citizens on Tuesday night when Edward McNally passed away during the night. As most of you already know, Ed was the founder of Big Rock Brewery and started the craft beer scene here in Alberta when he decided that there wasn’t enough choice in the beer fridges of our local liquor stores. While this achievement would be enough to secure someone’s legacy it was not the only one for Mr. McNally. Let’s take a look at a life of someone who lived it to the fullest. Continue reading

Macros and Micros and Nanos, Oh My!

The word is out that a teacher (Ben), a chemist (Derek), a baker/chef (Dylan) and one of their friends (anonymous at this time) have started Alberta’s very 1st nanobrewery: The Dandy Brewing Company . What I aim to do with this article is to shed some light on what this ground-breaking decision entails for craft beer in Alberta. Continue reading

Bringing Community Focused Craft Beer to Calgary

I have been in a really good mood lately. This is because one of my favourite Alberta craft breweries is opening up a location close by in Calgary. I’m sure that some of you have already guessed that I am talking about Bearhill Brewing Company’s Last Best Brewing & Distilling. I have a feeling that this microbrewery/brewpub will be a game changer for the Alberta craft beer scene. Continue reading
