OC Brewmaster’s Irish Wrist Watch & The 2015 Alberta Beer Festivals

Spring has arrived and everyone seems to be getting geared up for BBQs and patio sitting. Along with all of this outdoor fun comes something that craft beer lovers know & adore….Beer Festival Season! I stopped by Craft Beer Market for the launch of this year’s Alberta Beer Festivals beer to find out what we can expect to see once we flood through those doors to start sampling some delicious brewskis. Past and Present Imperial IPA

Recently an event took place in the Alberta craft beer scene that brought the past and present together for a new experience that will quench the thirst of the local craft beer community. If you’ve been reading my blog you may remember that I wrote a tribute to Brew Brothers when they decided to close their doors to the public. I later followed up with a post on the opening of Last Best Brewing & Distilling who took over the old Brew Brothers location on Electric Ave. Well the relationship between the old Brew Brothers crew & Last Best did not end there.  Many a pint has been shared between the two groups since then and they decided to brew an Imperial IPA together that’ll be filling pint glasses shortly. Becoming a Brewer at Hog’s Head

Growing up could be a wild time when you look back at it. Trying to determine what you want to do with yourself is a part of that journey. Some people want to become doctors & lawyers, others might want to join the fire department or take the reins of a corporation as a businessman. Then there are those different guys who seem to really like….beer. Continue reading

Two Casks, a Pig and an Oompah Band

Well it’s that time of year again. Break out those lederhosens & dirndls and get set to party like it’s 19th Century Bavaria because the 2nd Annual Calgary Oktoberfest is almost here! This year there’s a particular attraction that has caught some attention from the local beer geeks. It has been dubbed the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.  I would like to delve into what this is all about. Continue reading

Ed McNally: A Tribute To A Life Lived To Its Fullest

Alberta lost one of its most accomplished citizens on Tuesday night when Edward McNally passed away during the night. As most of you already know, Ed was the founder of Big Rock Brewery and started the craft beer scene here in Alberta when he decided that there wasn’t enough choice in the beer fridges of our local liquor stores. While this achievement would be enough to secure someone’s legacy it was not the only one for Mr. McNally. Let’s take a look at a life of someone who lived it to the fullest. Continue reading

Macros and Micros and Nanos, Oh My!

The word is out that a teacher (Ben), a chemist (Derek), a baker/chef (Dylan) and one of their friends (anonymous at this time) have started Alberta’s very 1st nanobrewery: The Dandy Brewing Company . What I aim to do with this article is to shed some light on what this ground-breaking decision entails for craft beer in Alberta. Continue reading

Craft Beer Spotlight Series: Ric Cutillo

For my 2nd article in the craft beer spotlight series I would like to cover Ric Cutillo. Ric is one of the owners of Kensington’s beer Mecca: Midtown Kitchen & Bar. As a regular at Midtown I know that this place is a definite plus when it comes to showcasing how incredible good beer can be. Judging from the crowds that I’ve seen at Midtown, there are lots of people who would agree with me. But for anyone unfamiliar with the spot, I hope that after reading this you’ll be inspired to go see what it’s like for yourself. And now on with the show. Continue reading

Craft Beer Spotlight Series: Marcus Brais

The Alberta craft beer scene is growing; I think that’s pretty obvious. There are many reasons for this growth spurt. One that pops to mind is the passionate people who have been working to nurture this growth. It is for this reason that I would like to have a series of articles showcasing some of these individuals. First up is Beer Revolution‘s Marcus Brais. Continue reading
