Attitudes in the Alberta Craft Beer Scene

Alberta craft beer is in a period of rapid expansion. There has been an explosion of new local breweries opening up across the province. It is really exciting to witness this take place. However, I have noticed on social media and sometimes even in person, certain attitudes that I find detrimental to our local beer culture. This article will be my rant/plea that we make sure to develop a local beer culture that is inclusive, educational, progressive and above all FUN. Continue reading

Why Alberta Beer Week Is Important

It came, it educated some and it surprised many. Being the 1st attempt at this cross-province event I was not sure what to expect. After going through it I would have to say that I hope to see Alberta Beer Week grow larger with each passing year. Here’s  why I believe  that we need  events like this in the Alberta  craft  beer  community. Continue reading

For The Love Of Brewing Beer

Today I have the pleasure of writing an article on my buddy, Jonas Hurtig. Jonas is a fellow beer lover (surprise surprise that we’d be friends) who also happens to be one of the best homebrewers that I’ve ever met. About a year back he made the jump into professional brewing. Soon one of his recipes will be released around the province as a seasonal one-off! So let’s get to know him a little bit. Past and Present Imperial IPA

Recently an event took place in the Alberta craft beer scene that brought the past and present together for a new experience that will quench the thirst of the local craft beer community. If you’ve been reading my blog you may remember that I wrote a tribute to Brew Brothers when they decided to close their doors to the public. I later followed up with a post on the opening of Last Best Brewing & Distilling who took over the old Brew Brothers location on Electric Ave. Well the relationship between the old Brew Brothers crew & Last Best did not end there.  Many a pint has been shared between the two groups since then and they decided to brew an Imperial IPA together that’ll be filling pint glasses shortly. Becoming a Brewer at Hog’s Head

Growing up could be a wild time when you look back at it. Trying to determine what you want to do with yourself is a part of that journey. Some people want to become doctors & lawyers, others might want to join the fire department or take the reins of a corporation as a businessman. Then there are those different guys who seem to really like….beer. Continue reading

More Wild Rose in Wild Rose Country

Wild Rose Country is seeing some big changes in their craft beer scene. For instance, Wild Rose Brewing Company (the first Alberta microbrewery that I fell for) has made some major moves recently. They opened up a new brewery, launched a different marketing campaign and of course, brewed more new beers for us to taste. Ya, 2014 is shaping up to be a good year for us Alberta craft beer hounds. Continue reading

The Quest of Half Hitch Brewing Co

The Alberta craft beer scene is growing and I couldn’t be happier! The province will be adding another microbrewery in about a year when Half Hitch Brewing Company opens in Cochrane. The brewery was founded by Chris Heier, an entrepreneur & homebrewer extraordinaire, along with the rest of the Heier family. I was able to speak to Chris about their new venture and his passion for brewing craft beer only made me more excited about what the future has in store for us thirsty Albertans. Continue reading

Cheers to 19 Years of Brew Brothers Craft Beer

Some of you may already be aware that Brew Brothers Brewery will be leaving the Alberta craft beer scene shortly. Many of us are saddened to see them go after 19 years of brewing great craft beer. I thought that it would only be appropriate to dedicate a post to honour their legacy.
