This will probably be my last post in 2013, so I thought that I’d end the year with a frozen high-note. Winter time in Canada may have its difficulties; the cold and snow can take their toll on us. But it can also have its pro side; skiing, snowshoeing, Christmas and winter craft beers! A few weeks back I took a short jaunt up to Canmore where I experienced both sides of winter. It was a bone-chilling -28 degrees outside but the town was all decked out for Christmas in Canmore and The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company restaurant had a fireplace to help keep warm! Continue reading
As many of you who already read this blog on a regular basis, you may already be aware of some of the recent changes in the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission‘s (AGLC) rules for breweries. Although many who are heavily involved and have invested interests in the beer scene already have complained that not enough has been done to address the complicated tax structure, home brewers like me are quite excited about one important thing: the removal of the minimum production requirements. Gone are the days when you needed to have the capacity to brew 50 HL (lots and lots of beer!) before the AGLC would even consider allowing you to open a brewery, unless you had a restaurant on premises. Another restaurant in Alberta? Well, unless you’re an amazing chef and have something new to bring to the table, you won’t last a year regardless of how awesome your beer is. Continue reading
Sometimes Facebook can provide you with useful information. A couple of weeks back I was lucky enough to see an announcement from Village Brewery that they would be offering some tours of their microbrewery to the public. Needless to say I gave them a call ASP and reserved my spot. After all, It would’ve been odd if I didn’t want to spend my afternoon hanging out a brewery and sampling craft beer!

A couple of Thursdays ago, I attended the “Beer Bash” at Willow Park, which craft beer fans should check out next year if they have not gone yet. I had a great time drinking different craft beers from all kinds of microbreweries and snacking on tasty food. However, the real highlight of the night for me was being able to talk to Big Rock Brewery’s Brewmaster, Paul Gautreau. Meeting Paul made me think about how much I like where he is steering Big Rock.
House or apartment hunting is different for everyone. Having a good neighbourhood pub is one of the things that I look for when scouting out new areas to live. Luckily, Calgary has a bunch of pubs serving quality craft beer on tap. I recently went to the The Pig & Duke for a meal and a couple of pints and this neighbourhood pub is exactly the kind of local hang out that I look for.
