It Was A Good Day For Beer

It’s funny how you can find inspiration to write about something. I have been mulling over different article topics for weeks. Yet all that it took was having an eventful day and boom, I knew what I wanted to say. This might come across as pointless to some but I think that this day, which was focused on beer of course, is a good indicator of how much our beer scene has grown over the last couple of years.  I hope that you agree. What I am Excited About: An Update On Our Growing Scene

It has been a while since I have written a post about one of the new Alberta craft breweries. I think that my last one was on Trolley 5. So what I plan on doing here is to write a post on the new local breweries that I am particularly excited about. Continue reading

Cellar Dweller Reviews: Silver Springs Liquor Store

When I moved to Calgary with my fiancee in March 2011, I was really hoping that we were moving to a friendly and safe neighbourhood. Based on the crime stats, I knew we were making the right decision and the view of COP and the slight background of the Alberta Rockies couldn’t be more magnificent. We are also steps from Bowmont Natural Environment Park, one of Calgary’s most beautiful natural areas with lots of walking paths, bike paths and great views of the Bow River. All-in-all, it’s a great place to live but there’s one thing that really sets this neighbourhood above and beyond most NW Calgary neighbourhoods, and that’s Silver Springs Liquor Store. Continue reading

Meet Alberta’s Cicerones

I can remember it like it was yesterday. Sitting in a nice restaurant with a wonderful lady across from me; I pick up the wine list to select a bottle. WTF is a Beaujolais… a good jolly?! Panic began to set in as I began thinking about how foolish I was about to look. Thankfully a sommelier swooped in and was able to guide me towards a smart and economical (ya I’m thrifty) choice. With the explosion in popularity of craft beer in this province it is possible to walk into a pub or restaurant and be completely overwhelmed by the extensive beer list. So who you gonna call when you’re struggling to understand what a Trappist beer is? Enter the Cicerone. Continue reading

Craft Beer Spotlight Series: Ric Cutillo

For my 2nd article in the craft beer spotlight series I would like to cover Ric Cutillo. Ric is one of the owners of Kensington’s beer Mecca: Midtown Kitchen & Bar. As a regular at Midtown I know that this place is a definite plus when it comes to showcasing how incredible good beer can be. Judging from the crowds that I’ve seen at Midtown, there are lots of people who would agree with me. But for anyone unfamiliar with the spot, I hope that after reading this you’ll be inspired to go see what it’s like for yourself. And now on with the show. Continue reading

Village NUTRaiser: A Beer with Balls

One of the things that I love most about craft breweries is how engaged they are with their local communities. They aren’t just some massive faceless entity pumping out suds to make the most profit possible. Village Brewery uses the slogan: “It takes a village to raise a beer. And a beer to raise a village.” to emphasize how community-oriented they are. I had the pleasure of attending one of their recent events which involved the Village Wit, a pair of bull testicles and a really good cause. Continue reading

Craft Beer Spotlight Series: Marcus Brais

The Alberta craft beer scene is growing; I think that’s pretty obvious. There are many reasons for this growth spurt. One that pops to mind is the passionate people who have been working to nurture this growth. It is for this reason that I would like to have a series of articles showcasing some of these individuals. First up is Beer Revolution‘s Marcus Brais. Continue reading

YYC International Beerfest was a Blast! Next up: YEG Craft Beer Festival

If the BMO Centre seems strangely quiet recently it is probably because the Calgary International Beerfest has come and gone. I was able to take it in both as a volunteer (an experience that I highly recommend to any passionate beer fans) and as a spectator (read beer drinker ). I know that lots of you showed up and had a blast but I want to put a few of my highlights down here just for the record. So bear with me. Continue reading
