Craft Beer Spotlight Series: Kyle Smythe

I’m still making up for lost ground here so I wanted to get another article out there. I have to warn you right off the bat that this one is a little more personal than usual. Someone who I know, work alongside and hang out with is leaving the Alberta craft beer industry to head west to Kelowna. I figured that a little tribute piece was in order to send him off. So here it is, here’s the beer drenched story of Kyle Smythe. Continue reading

Past and Present Imperial IPA

Recently an event took place in the Alberta craft beer scene that brought the past and present together for a new experience that will quench the thirst of the local craft beer community. If you’ve been reading my blog you may remember that I wrote a tribute to Brew Brothers when they decided to close their doors to the public. I later followed up with a post on the opening of Last Best Brewing & Distilling who took over the old Brew Brothers location on Electric Ave. Well the relationship between the old Brew Brothers crew & Last Best did not end there.  Many a pint has been shared between the two groups since then and they decided to brew an Imperial IPA together that’ll be filling pint glasses shortly. Favourite Winter Seasonals From BC Beer Bloggers & One Albertan

I have to say that I was pretty excited when I got the invite to collaborate with this group of British Columbia craft beer bloggers. The beer culture on our western coast is something for all of us to aspire to. Just looking at all of the dedicated bloggers out there gives you an idea of how popular their local craft brewing scene is. The idea behind this collaboration is for each blogger (West Coast Beer Geek, Mike’s Craft Beer, Dennis the Foodie, me &The BeerRater ) to choose 3 winter seasonal releases that we’re excited about. Since I am an Albertan my choices will come from our microbreweries. I should warn you that at the time of writing this one of my choices has not been released yet; I’m just really excited to check it out! Continue reading

National’s Battle of the Casks!

November is shaping up to be a good month in terms of cask ale. We had the Casks for a Cause recently which saw 12 cask ales (and 1 cask killa’) available for sampling. Next up National 17 will be hosting another awesome event for another great cause. So let’s talk about that for a minute. Continue reading

Two Casks, a Pig and an Oompah Band

Well it’s that time of year again. Break out those lederhosens & dirndls and get set to party like it’s 19th Century Bavaria because the 2nd Annual Calgary Oktoberfest is almost here! This year there’s a particular attraction that has caught some attention from the local beer geeks. It has been dubbed the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.  I would like to delve into what this is all about. Continue reading

Bringing Community Focused Craft Beer to Calgary

I have been in a really good mood lately. This is because one of my favourite Alberta craft breweries is opening up a location close by in Calgary. I’m sure that some of you have already guessed that I am talking about Bearhill Brewing Company’s Last Best Brewing & Distilling. I have a feeling that this microbrewery/brewpub will be a game changer for the Alberta craft beer scene. Continue reading
